Neuron Demo

The 1952 model that explained the action potential. Inject current and watch sodium and potassium gates open and close; block channels or warm the membrane to see what changes.

What it models

A small patch of squid giant-axon membrane with Hodgkin and Huxley's sodium, potassium and leak conductances and their voltage-dependent gates m, h and n. Try a pulse just below threshold, two pulses inside the refractory period, or a constant current above about 6.3 µA/cm² for repetitive firing.

Method

  • Classic 1952 rate functions in the modern sign convention; temperature scales rates by 3(T−6.3)/10.
  • Fourth-order Runge–Kutta, Δt = 0.01 ms, about 3,000 steps a second at normal playback.
